Using RSSocial! in module positions

In this article you will find a step-by-step guide to using RSSocial! in module positions. Explanations range from installing the module to customizing its look and integrating social networks.

Step 1: Installing the module

This is done via the default Joomla! Extension Manager, we've linked to the complete installation guide below:

RSSocial! step-by-step installation guide

Step 2: Publish and set a display location

Head to Extensions >> Extension Manager >> look for the RSSocial! module and edit it. Then, head to the Module tab. There are multiple parameters that can be configured, but the following 2 are the most important:

  • Status: This needs to be set to Published, otherwise the module will not be loaded at all
  • Position: Choose one of your template's module positions in which the module will be loaded.

The RSSocial! module can also be displayed in floating positions. Within the Appearance area, set the Positioning option to Floating.

Step 3: Choose the social behavior

The social presence can be displayed in two ways (controlled by the Appearence > Mode setting):

  • have a simple icon link to your social pages
  • display various social profile information, such as likes, shares, counters and so on.

The image gallery below contains some Floating and Inline examples:

Step 4: Layout and style adjustments

RSSocial! provides quite a few tools that will allow you to display the module in a way that will match your overall sites' look and feel. You can choose between two themes (standard or circle backgrounds), icon font colors, size, transparency, etc. More details on the appearence related settings here.

The Sharing mode, provides specific settings per social platform. These can be customized within their own specific areas - e.g. Facebook tab.

Let's assume that you wish to add Facebook sharing button website.

  • Head to Extensions >> Extension Manager >> look for the RSSocial! module and edit it.
  • In the Module tab, choose a template position in which the module should be displayed. This is done in the Position field.
  • In the Menu Assignment, select Only on the pages selected and select your homepage by checking the box associated with it.
  • In the Appearance tab select Sharing in the Mode field.
  • Depending on how you wish to have the buttons displayed, choose either Floating or Inline in the Positioning field.
  • Head over to the RSSocial! Facebook configuration tab, don't forget to set an URL and use the social platform specific parameters.

Step 5: Settings per social platform

Integrations with the foolowing networks are supported: Facebook, Google+, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Last.FM, Pinterest, SoundCloud, Tumblr, Flickr, GitHub, Vimeo, Digg, Skype, Instagram, RSS, StumbleUpon and Reddit, each having its own configuration tab from which you can enable / disable any of the integrations.

There are 2 sets of parameters that can be configured for almost every social network: one for the Icons mode and one for Sharing, here are some examples:

The Facebook integration offers the most configuration options. You can set up parameters like Like action and type, choose whether to show faces or not (profile images thumbnails), set a font for the Like button and choose whether to display the Share button or not. There's a whole article dedicated to this integration, linked below:

Configuring the Facebook integration

The Google+ integration only offers 4 types of buttons as customization options: Small (15px), Medium (20px), Standard (24px) and Tall (60px). You can find more detailed information on this integration in the article linked below:

The Twitter integration only includes 3 options that regard the Share button: you can either hide it or display it horizontally or vertically. More information on this in the article linked below:

Integrating other available social networks is done in a very similar manner. Please visit the Module configuration parameters section in our documentation for a complete listing of articles dedicated to setting up the module and its integrations.
