I have a few conditional fields set up and in the back-end submissions all of the first items are displayed for every conditional field even if they weren't chosen by the submitter.

I only want the data that was selected on the form to be recorded in the submission - what am I doing wrong?

Here is a screenshot of the submissions - the red arrows show the data that was selected but you can see all of the colleges and students fields were populated with a choice even though they weren't selected in the form:

Due to the fact that all your dropdown items have values, even if they are hidden for the submitter a value is sent to the database. You can overcome this issue by adding an item like the one below to your lists :

|Please select

Notice the "|" character, this is used to separate value from label.
