Detect and save a component customizations during upgrades

Upgrading to a newer version of a component causes the loss of all customizations done to the core files. Currently it is a user's responsibility to keep track of the custom changes, and to remember to restore them after each upgrade.
It would be nice if during the upgrade process the modified files were detected and backed up automatically. At the end of the upgrade procedure a user would receive the message like:
Upgrade has completed successfully. We detected modifications in the following files and directories:
file1
file2
...
The files are backed up under . Please review and restore the changes.
