Thinking of migrating to Joomla! 1.6 ?

Joomla! 1.6 I’m sure that with the release of Joomla! 1.6, you’ve been asking yourself a lot of questions:

  • whether to migrate your sites to 1.6 now or wait a little longer;
  • is there a migration tool that helps you move data from 1.5 to 1.6 in case you decide to migrate now?
  • in case you decide to wait, what is the optimal time until migrating your production sites to 1.6?
  • are the RSJoomla! extensions ready for 1.6?

and so on …

Will RSJoomla! extensions be compatible with Joomla! 1.6?

As we’ve said in our earlier post, we’re working hard to update all our extensions to be 1.6 compatible (except for RSForm light, not to be confused with RSForm!Pro and RSTickets! light.)

Until now, we've finished updating RSMail!, RSFiles!, RSFirewall!, RSSeo! and currently working on RSMembership! and RSEvents!.

We don't have an exact release date, but we assure you that all RSJoomla! extensions will be compatible with Joomla! 1.6.

What you need to know before migrating to 1.6?

  • Nobody is rushing you to move your site to 1.6. Joomla! 1.5 is a Long Term Support (LTS) release, which means that it will be supported 15 more months from now on.
Joomla! 1.5 is stable and mature compared to Joomla! 1.6, which hasn't really been tested in the opened market.
  • the migration tool that helps you move the database from Joomla! 1.5 to Joomla! 1.6 isn’t ready yet (you can help the author to finish this tool).
  • there is no legacy mode for Joomla! 1.6, therefore developers will need more time to update their extensions.
  • template developers will also need time to update to 1.6.

Our advice:

Although Joomla! 1.6 is fresh and you’re eager to use its hot new features on a live site, consider that Joomla! 1.5 is stable and mature and it will be supported another 15 months from now on.

Meanwhile, play with 1.6 on the development server!

Joomla 1.6

Although Joomla isn't really ready for the migration from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6, it's a great opportunity to start new websites in the new version of Joomla. Especially website where not a lot of components are required. So that's what I'm doing now for a new project. With my other sites, I wait until the migration tool is complete to migrate from 1.5 to 1.6 :-)

Can't wait to implement some of your extensions in my mew project. Luckely I'm nog in a hurry, so I'll see them coming.
